When studying a foreign language, one of the most interesting parts is the one that can\u2019t be taught in lessons: words and expressions that sound hilariously strange if translated directly. <\/p>\n
How well do you know the Japanese language? Find out by trying to make sense of these terrible translations. Take out a piece of paper, write down whatever comes to your mind and then check your answers (given below).<\/p>\n
1.) She is a Christmas cake<\/i><\/b>. (hint: you cannot eat this poor girl.)
2.) Yesterday, I bought some horizontal rice<\/i><\/b>.
3.) My mouth is lonely<\/i><\/b>.
4.) Did you see that barcode man<\/i><\/b>?
5.) This boy is a real parasite single<\/i><\/b>.
6.) My hand is leaving my throat<\/i><\/b>!
7.) That was great. My cheeks are falling off<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n
1.) \u30af\u30ea\u30b9\u30de\u30b9\u30b1\u30fc\u30ad\uff1a This term describes a woman at the age of 25 that is not yet married.
2.) \u6a2a\u98ef (\u3088\u3053\u3081\u3057, yokomeshi)\uff1a This is not some weird genetically modified rice. It is normal, western style food.
3.) \u53e3\u5bc2\u3057\u3044(\u304f\u3061\u3055\u3073\u3057\u3044, kuchi sabishii)\uff1a Hearing that one might actually get the impression that your body parts have developed emotions. Just imagine your nose or eyes talking to you talking about how depressing their day might have been. Of course, this is not what this means. Japanese people use the term \u201clonely mouth\u201d when referring to eating without actually being hungry.
4.) \u30d0\u30fc\u30b3\u30fc\u30c9\u4eba (\u30d0\u30fc\u30b3\u30c9\u3072\u3068, “ba-ko-do hito”)\uff1a This term is used for a balding man whose hair is combed over in a way that makes it look like a barcode. Were you already having nightmares about all the barcodes on your purchases taking over your apartment?
5.) \u30d1\u30e9\u30b5\u30a4\u30c8\u30b7\u30f3\u30b2\u30eb\uff1a An adult living alone staying at their parents\u2019 house. This term is self-explanatory \u2026 once you know what it means.
6.) \u5589\u304b\u3089\u624b\u304c\u51fa\u308b (\u306e\u3069\u304b\u3089\u3066\u304c\u3067\u308b, “nodo kara te ha deru”)\uff1aHowever scary this might sound, it is actually just the expression for wanting something terribly bad.
7.) \u307b\u3063\u307a\u305f\u304c\u843d\u3061\u308b(\u307b\u3063\u307a\u305f\u304c\u304a\u3061\u308b “hoppeta ga ochiru”)\uff1a Don\u2019t worry. Your conversation partner has not developed some kind of weird disease. He has only just eaten something extraordinary delicious.<\/p>\n
