It is named that way because traditionally no \u7a7a\u624b\u5bb6 \uff08\u304b\u3089\u3066\u304b\uff09or Karate practitioner would use weapons to fight. Another reason for it to be named so is the fact that it was originally written \u5510\u624b\uff08\u304b\u3089\u3066\uff09or the hand of the Tang Dynasty of China and due to Japan&#8217;s history this had to be changed. <\/p>\n<p>The art from itself originated in \uff08\u6c96\u7e04\uff09Okinawa in the early stages of its  development, which arguably can be traced back all the way to 1300s. But unsurprisingly, it is incredibly difficult find out the real origin of the art form in this era. The reason why there is no real use of weapons in Okinawan \u7a7a\u624b, according to the popular belief, is that after the ban on weapons in the 1600s, people were encouraged to learn how defend themselves using just their hands as a weapon. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20170602-itosu_anko.jpg\" width=\"422\" height=\"572\" alt=\"null\" title=\"null\"><\/p>\n<p>There were three distinct styles of  \u7a7a\u624band they are believed to have originated from \u9996\u91cc\u624b\uff08\u3057\u3085\u308a\u3066\uff09, \u90a3\u8987\u624b\uff08\u306a\u306f\u3066\uff09\u3001and \u6cca\u624b\uff08\u3068\u307e\u308a\u3066\uff09\u3002The styles were named after the cities they were mostly practiced at. <\/p>\n<p>At the turn of 20th century \u7a7a\u624b was allowed to be introduced to public schools in Okinawa. One school that adopted the practise early on in 1902 is \u7cf8\u6d32\u5b89\u6052 \uff08\u3044\u3068\u3059\u3042\u3093\u3053\u3046) school. <\/p>\n<p>\u8239\u8d8a\u7fa9\u73cd\uff08\u3075\u306a\u3053\u3057\u304e\u3061\u3093\uff09, one of Itosu&#8217;s students, further expanded the art form to the rest of Japan. He is also credited to changing the older name of \u5510\u624b into \u7a7a\u624b as we know it today in order for it to be accepted into the \u5927\u65e5\u672c\u6b66\u5fb3\u4f1a\uff08\u3060\u3044\u306b\u3063\u307d\u3093\u3076\u3068\u304f\u304b\u3044\uff09or Japanese Martial Arts Association, which was introduced in one of the previous blog posts. These and many other changes have lead \u7a7a\u624b to become accepted as a traditional \u6b66\u9053 \uff08\u3076\u3069\u3046\uff09or Martial Art by the Japanese. <\/p>\n<p><b>Practice<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Different styles of \u7a7a\u624b all have various  \u57fa\u672c (\u304d\u307b\u3093\uff09or foundation movements and \u578b \uff08\u304b\u305f\uff09which is, like in many martial arts, a set of movements codifying them into a pattern. It is supposed to simulate a defensive and offensive situation. There is also a sparring part of \u7a7a\u624b between two practitioners called \u7d44\u624b\uff08\u304f\u307f\u3066\uff09and it can be seen during a normal practice as well as during competitions. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20170602-320px-karate_shuricastle.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"234\" alt=\"null\" title=\"null\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Belt System<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There are slight variations of belt systems in \u7a7a\u624b but generally if you are beginner, you are expected to wear a while belt or \u5e2f \uff08\u304a\u3073\uff09. As you progress through the ranks you will attain: Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue\/Green. Purple, Brown and finally Black.  One thing to note is that Black belt has a number of so called \u6bb5 \uff08\u3060\u3093\uff09grades that are there to mark the skill of a \u7a7a\u624b\u5bb6 as they progress further. <\/p>\n<p><b>\u7a7a\u624b\u3000Now<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These days \u7a7a\u624b is practiced as a sport and a martial art all over the world  and is even recognised by the Olympic Committee.  There are many \u7a7a\u624b organisations and discussing them in detail goes beyond anything that we can realistically discuss on this blog.
