Today we will be looking into one of the more recently developed martial arts or\u6b66\u9053\uff08\u3076\u3069\u3046\uff09of Japan. <\/p>\n

Brief History<\/b><\/p>\n
\u5408\u6c17\u9053 was created in 1920s! That\u2019s right, \u5408\u6c17\u9053 is less than a hundred years old. It was developed by \u690d\u829d\u76db\u5e73\uff08\u3046\u3048\u3057\u3070\u30fb\u3082\u308a\u3078\u3044\uff09who was influenced by a much older Japanese \u6b66\u9053 school called \u5927\u6771\u6d41\u5408\u6c17\u8853\uff08\u3060\u3044\u3068\u3046\u308a\u3085\u3046\u3042\u3044\u304d\u3058\u3085\u3064\uff09.\u3000The school was a predecessor to a number of martial arts and the current version of \u5408\u6c17\u9053 is one of them. The older version was called \u5408\u6c17\u67d4\u8853\uff08\u3042\u3044\u304d\u3058\u3085\u3046\u3058\u3085\u3064\uff09. It combined various `soft` and `hard` techniques of fighting. <\/p>\n
Additionally \u690d\u829d\u5148\u751f\uff08\u3046\u3048\u3057\u3070\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044\uff09was also influenced by the Shinto religion, which promotes peace, harmony and compassion towards others. So \u5408\u6c17\u9053 became a `soft` martial art where instead of harming an opponent, the energy of the attack is redirected and used to resolve conflict without harming anyone. The ultimate pursuit of an \u5408\u6c17\u9053 practitioner is not to become technically perfect or even in their physical development, but in working towards improving her\/himself as a person.<\/p>\n

The Practice<\/b><\/p>\n
As in many of the martial arts, the practice of \u5408\u6c17\u9053 can only be done in pairs. An attacker or \u53d7\u3051\uff08\u3046\u3051\uff09and a receiver or \u53d6\u308a\uff08\u3068\u308a\uff09 will typically perform practiced movements together in order to learn different aspects of one or another technique. There are a great number of throwing and falling techniques a practitioner has to be introduced to and master before moving on to the `multiple attacker` practice. <\/p>\n
There are slight variations in the way each particular school of \u5408\u6c17\u9053 approaches the basic teachings of \u690d\u829d\u5148\u751f, but they all follow the same principles which makes \u5408\u6c17\u9053 an ever evolving \u6b66\u9053 that appeals to millions of people world-wide. <\/p>\n
\u5408\u6c17\u9053\u7740\u3000\uff08\u3042\u3044\u304d\u3069\u3046\u304e\uff09- uniform<\/b><\/p>\n
As in other Japanese Martial Arts, a practitioner of \u5408\u6c17\u9053 will normally progress through the \u7d1a\uff08\u304d\u3085\u3046\uff09grades before being tested for the so-called \u521d\u6bb5\uff08\u3057\u3087\u3060\u3093\uff09level. At \u7d1a level they wear a white tunic and loose pants, with a colored belt according to their level, very similar to the standard karate uniform. When they reach \u6bb5 level a pair of black, wide trousers or \u88b4\uff08\u306f\u304b\u307e\uff09 may be permitted to be worn by the 1st Dan practitioner, though this may vary on a school-by-school basis. <\/p>\n

Because \u5408\u6c17\u9053 promotes peace and harmony, most schools do not support the idea of competitions. That being said, there are some branches of \u5408\u6c17\u9053that do hold competitive events. Their argument is: competing is not the same as fighting, but just another way of learning about oneself. <\/p>\n
