Weekend trip to Iki Island 2014

2-day trip to the beautiful island of Iki, about an hour by ferry from Fukuoka. The trip included lessons in zazen meditation, calligraphy, candle making and traditional Japanese dance.

Also known as Girl's Day or Doll's day, special dolls representing the royal family and court attendees are displayed on a red carpet, wishing girls' healthy growth and happiness. Traditional hinamatsuri foods are chirashizushi, sugar-flavored sushi rice vinegar with raw fish on top and a variety of other ingredients; clam soup served in the shell; and sakura-mochi, a pink, sweet rice cake.

Daijayama 2014

Held every year in July. A huge parade held over several days featuring giant floats in the shape of a snake, and thousands of dancers participating in a traditional dance. There is also a fireworks display during the festival.
