EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Here are just some of the activities that are available with these packages.

Bear in mind that these are just examples, so the actual activities during your course may be different.

Kimono wearing

Have you ever wanted to wear traditional Japanese attire and stroll around the city? Try on the elegant and traditional formal attire of ancient Japan! You’ll start the day like any other: in your jeans and sneakers, or whatever casual attire you usually go for. But by the end of the day, you’ll have felt what it’s like to literally wear history and tradition. The way you carry yourself will change; you will learn how to walk in zori or geta. Perhaps by the end of the class, you’ll even want to get your own kimono!

Taiko drumming

This isn't your usual drumming. Taiko is actually a mixture of martial arts and music, and it is practiced at a dojo and with the same energy and dedication as any other Japanese martial art! Pick up the drumsticks, assume the drumming kamae (stance) and join the heartbeat of Japan!

Zazen meditation

Meditation takes many forms, but it doesn't get more pure than going to a zen temple and having a go at it the traditional way. Learn the correct way to sit, and empty your mind during this tranquil moment within your busy day. Zazen helps you quiet your mind, forget your worries, and even forget yourself for a little while. Learn the tranquility of listening to the sound of your breathing and the steps of the ever-vigilant Buddhist monk who is there to make sure that all is done according to tradition. At the end of the class, you will get a cup of tea and a snack!

Manga drawing

When you think of Japan, what do you think about? The samurai or geisha, or perhaps manga and anime? What’s your favorite anime? This class will teach you how to draw manga characters, the basics of manga-style storytelling, and tons of other useful tips that will help you create your own tiny manga! You do not have to be good at drawing at all, and who knows, this class may show you a new path you want to follow! Pick up a pencil and show us your creativity!

Traditional Japanese cooking

One highlight of Japan for most all tourists and locals alike is the food! Tempura, soba, katsu, donburi... you name it, it’s delicious! Of course, it’s super fun to go out and try different restaurants during your time in Japan, but why not have a go at making your own Japanese cuisine and learning how Japanese people actually make all of these staple foods? Elevate your cooking chops in this class and amaze your friends and family back at home with your new kitchen skills!

Japanese paper making

Japanese paper or washi is world-famous and there is a very good reason for that! The same creation method has been used for generations. Technology has made some of the process a little faster, but the basics are still the same as they've always been. In this class, you will actually get the hands-on experience of making Japanese paper. It is an incredibly rare opportunity. And to top it off, you will get to take the sheet of paper you made home with you!
