Plus Pop Culture
This course is for those who really want to get a deep understanding of Japan as it is today, and experience the most fun, interesting and weird aspects of modern culture.
You will have 6 hours of cultural "experience" classes every Saturday. Culture classes are held on a monthly schedule, so activities repeat each calendar month
All classes are based on gaining an understanding of and appreciation for Japanese culture, learning a specific point of Japanese, and participating in the beauty of Japanese traditional art. We guarantee that you'll have a great experience!
Here are just some of the activities that are available on this course. Bear in mind that these are just examples, and that the actual activities on your course may be different. Click on an activity to view its description and some photos!
When you think of Japan, what do you think about? The samurai maybe, Geisha or Manga and Anime? What is your favourite anime? This class will teach you how to draw manga characters, the basics of the manga-style storytelling and many other little nuggets of knowledge that will help you create your own tiny manga! You do not have to be good at drawing at all and who knows, it may show you a new path you might want to follow! Pick up a pencil and show us your creativity!
Kawaii Monster Cafe
Harajuku is world famous as a Pop Culture meccha, and now you too have the chance to explore its little nooks and crannies. Imagine going through the looking glass and entering Wonderland on fast forward. Imagine having a sugar rush that does not cause a sugar crush and you will have some idea of what this wonderfully off-the-rails cafe is like. You can have a go at eating blue rice, green mashed potatoes and pasta that looks more like a rainbow than a dish. There are characters who live in this world and you will get a chance to see them dance, and maybe take a selfie with one of them. Follow us into the rabbit hole!
Japan is very much a food-centric society. If you have seen any Japanese TV programmes at some point, you will have found countless cooking variety shows! In this class, you would not be watching, but participating! Ramen, Gyoza, Sushi, Donburi… have you ever wondered how the Japanese achieve these flavours? Would you like to find out? Just imagine coming back home from your travels and whipping up some delicious Japanese dishes, impressing everyone around you! Cooking is a skill, and Japanese cooking is an art form.
